Effect of spectral content and learning on auditory distance perception

چکیده
We studied the importance of the stimulus spectrum and of the listener’s experience on the human ability to judge distance of auditory objects. The study was performed in a virtual auditory environment (VAE), created by convolution of the stimuli with non-individual Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTFs) measured in a regular classroom. The listeners’ task was to judge the distance of sounds originating at distances of 0.15 to 2 meters directly ahead or to the right of the listener’s head. Three types of stimuli were presented: lowpass-filtered, highpass-filtered, and broadband stimuli. Each listener performed four blocks of measurements, two on one day and two on a later day, with separation of at least 12 hours. No significant effect of spectrum was found, presumably because the non-individual HRTFs do not provide accurate cues to the listeners, making the task very difficult even with broadband stimuli. However, a systematic learning effect was observed in all listeners: while their performance did not change across the blocks performed on the same day, it improved between the blocks performed on different days. Thus, it can be hypothesized that a process similar to memory consolidation is observed that leads to improved performance and that requires a long break between the measurement sessions.

Correlation between Auditory Spectral Resolution and Speech Perception in Children with Cochlear Implants
Background: Variability in speech performance is a major concern for children with cochlear implants (CIs). Spectral resolution is an important acoustic component in speech perception. Considerable variability and limitations of spectral resolution in children with CIs may lead to individual differences in speech performance. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between auditory ...
متن کاملEffects of Spectral Content on Distance Perception in Reverberant Space
In an anechoic environment, distance perception for nearby sources degrades if there is no low-frequency spectral content in a stimulus, presumably because of the importance of low-frequency interaural level difference cues (Brungart, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 106:3589-3602). However, distance perception is essentially the same for monaural and binaural stimuli simulated at nearby distances in reverb...
متن کاملEffect of Vowel Auditory Training on the Speech-In-Noise Perception among Older Adults with Normal Hearing
Introduction: Aging reduces the ability to understand speech in noise. Hearing rehabilitation is one of the ways to help older people communicate effectively. This study aimed to investigate the effect of vowel auditory training on the improvement of speech-in-noise (SIN) perception among elderly listeners. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted on 36 elderly ...

This study aimed at investigating the effect of visual (Cuisenaire Rods) and auditory nonsensical monosyllables using Pratt speech processing software as teaching techniques on retention of word stress. To this end, 60 high school participants made the two experimental groups of the study each having 30 students on the basis of their proficiency scores on KET (Key English Test). In one experime...
متن کاملThe Comparative Effect of Visual vs. Auditory Input Enhancement on Learning Non-Congruent Phrasal Verbs by Iranian EFL Learners
Vocabulary is one of the essential components of language and learning phrasal verbs as part of vocabulary is quite challenging for foreign language learners. The present study aimed at investigating the effects of visual and auditory input enhancement on learning non-congruent phrasal verbs. The participants of the study were 90 intermediate English language learners who were divided into two ...
